In the aftermath of the Shultz Fire of 2010, the forest road up to Lockett Meadow has been closed. This adds another 3 miles of hiking to access the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks. The walk up the closed road is a steady climb of approximately 1000 feet in elevation gain, but the beautiful scenery, lush forest and colorful wildflowers make the walk tolerable. Burnt slopes come into view the last mile of the walk and as you enter Lockett Meadow. New aspen trees are popping up, wildflowers are blooming, and mushrooms are sprouting, thanks to the abundant monsoon rains.
